“Coming then?” Seth asked, after Cassie had spent a good twenty minutes standing in the Harrington sitting room and wishing she’d followed her instincts. No one had spoken to her apart from David, the sheriff and the other deputies. She’d had her share of sour looks and snarky sidelong glances, but now Seth loomed over her.

“Coming where?” she asked, disinclined to go anywhere but home.

“To hear the will. You should.”

“Why not?” she replied. “It will be interesting.” Had Alan made another one then? She walked upstairs where Tate waited with three other men she recognized from the planning meetings. They all stood by an open door that led into a small sitting room. And Mother Harrington sat on a throne-like chair by the window.

“You brought her?” she said, looking at Seth rather than Cassie.

“As you asked, Mother.”

“Sit down,” the old woman said, and Cassie noticed there were just enough chairs for everyone, including a short man in a suit and gold-rimmed glasses.

Cassie took the chair closest to the door, next to a cousin she’d heard called Saul. Mother Harrington rapped on the table with what looked like a soup ladle. “Quiet,” she said. “Listen, all of you.” And she looked directly at Cassie. Who looked right back.

The man in the glasses stood and introduced himself as Lawton Wetheridge from a law firm in Christiansburg. “As most of you are aware,” he began, “the late Mr. Harrington made a new will, a week before he died.”

The gasp was hers. Everyone else had known. The look of smug hatred on Mother Harrington’s face as she met Cassie’s eyes was enough to enrage a statue. Cassie met her glare with a look she hoped would kill. It didn’t but the old woman looked away first. A very minor victory but just enough to pull Cassie together.

“Sorry for the interruption,” she said. “I wasn’t aware. I must have slipped my in-laws’ minds to mention it, but please go on.” If they thought she was letting go again, they were in for a shock. If she could keep a poker face while out-bidding other dealers and haggling with sellers and buyers, she could certainly out-face a bunch of werebears.

She nearly laughed aloud at that thought. She had to keep hold of herself. At least until this was over and she was safely heading home.

Seemed her comment had rather nonplussed Mr. Wetheridge. After a few furtive whispers with Mother Harrington and Seth, he nodded, coughed and picked up Alan’s last will and testament.

It made intriguing listening. Seemed Alan had left everything to his mother and brothers—the house in Boston, his 401K, his bank accounts, his personal property and clothes, even the car she had parked outside. He had left her the sum of a thousand dollars. So she couldn’t claim she’d been disinherited perhaps? Who knew and who cared?

As the lawyer finished, she stood. She had to get out of there or she’d scream. Or burst out laughing.

“Sit down!” Mother Harrington almost screeched it.

Not even looking back, Cassie headed for the door.
